Benji Reid
Lives & Works in Manchester, UK
Benji Reid’s vision as Performer and Creative Director has made him an Award Winning and senior contributor to the Black physical theatre canon over the last 30 years. Merging his performance success with photography, Reid began producing images in 2012. Reid considers himself a Choreo-Photolist; a term he coined to encapsulate his unique practice where theatricality, choreography and photography meet in the image. His breath-taking photographs are composed primarily as self-portraits in incredible poses with a medley of props. These hyperrealities explore challenging themes, such as mental health and fatherhood.

Reid held his successful first solo show, Laugh at Gravity at October Gallery in 2021. His work has been exhibited in Get Up, Stand Up Now at London's Somerset House (2019); Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts, New York (2019); and at the Whitworth, Manchester (2022). Reid has recently presented his Afro-futurist photography and hip-hop theatre as part of Manchester International Festival 2023, which brought together dancers and photography into the fold to create images in real-time in front of his audience.

Benji Reid will be presented by October Gallery.
