Kwaku Yaro
Lives & Works in Accra, Ghana
Kwaku Yaro’s work is an exploration of the importance of community. Inspired by the people of Labadi, a peri-urban town located along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Accra where he was born and raised, Yaro explores the blend of experiences and emotions that the people in the town, both young and old, experience during their daily lives. In doing so he takes on the roles of observer and storyteller. Yaro uses woven plastic mats as his canvases to bring to life different characters, each with their distinct style and swag, and unique stories and histories; his work shows that together they form a community. Using acrylic for their features and various found fabric materials for their clothing, Yaro’s characters embody the essence of Labadi. Kwaku Yaro will be presented by SEPTIEME Gallery.
