Abu Bakarr Mansaray
Lives & Works in Sierra Leone and Harlingen, the Netherlands
Abu Bakarr Mansaray has risen in prominence since his introduction to the international art world at the 2015 Venice Biennale. First exhibited by Jean Hubert Martin in Magiciens de la Terre, 1989, Mansaray has seen success, exhibiting at a number of shows, notably the touring exhibition Africa Remix, which started in 2004 under the artist direction of Simon Njami; Why Africa, at Picocateca Agnelli in 2008, Art/Afrique, and Le Nouvel Atelier at the Foundation Louis Vuitton, in 2017. Mansaray’s draughtsmanship focuses on a childhood fascination with magical and mythical machines, often violent in form and executed in astonishing detail. These protective talismans serve as a warning to mankind and as a power source for the artist himself who invests them with the potential for social change and cohesion. Abu Bakarr Mansaray will be presented by The Gallery of Everything.
