Athenkosi Kwinana

Athenkosi Kwinana is a visual activist based in Johannesburg, South Africa, who explores the lives and interactions of Persons Living with Albinism (PLWA) within local communities. Through drawing and printmaking, Kwinana addresses the representation of Black PLWA in contemporary South African visual culture. Her art practice focuses on raising awareness and understanding of Albinism, and helping to challenge societal perceptions of Black PLWA. Graduating from Walter Sisulu University in 2017 with a National Diploma in Fine Art and a Bachelor of Technology in Fine Arts in 2018, Kwinana obtained her master’s in fine arts from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in 2022.  In 2022, she held her first solo exhibition, "Reimagining Albus," at Number Four in Constitution Hill. Her works have been showcased at Berman Contemporary between 2022  and 2023, 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London in 2022, and the Investec Cape Town Art Fair in 2023.  Athenkosi Kwinana will be presented by Berman Contemporary.
