Mehryl Ferri Levisse
Born 1985 in Charleville-Mézières France, Died in 2023.
Mehryl Ferri Levisse was an artist based between Casablanca and Ardennes. Exploring subjectivity and queer identity, his work challenged gender norms through pageantry and masquerade. An LGBTQIA+ activist, he created Travball to combat homophobia in sports. He posthumously received a grant from DILCRAH in recognition of his work with Travball. Levisse's practice interrogates queer identity using gendered symbols, pageantry, and cabaret imagery. Employing diverse media such as performance, installations, and patterned ornamentation, he challenged conventional notions of masculinity and femininity. His work, rooted in activism, subverts societal norms, aiming to deconstruct and reshape perceptions of gender and identity. Levisse’s work has been presented in international museums, galleries, and biennials such as the Centre Pompidou, Paris; Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, and the International Biennale of Casablanca. His work is housed in prestigious collections like SCAD Museum, USA; FRAC Alsace, France; and MoMA artist book collection. Levisse's contributions extended beyond the art world, reflecting his commitment to social change.  Mehryl Ferri Levisse will be presented by Revie Projects.
