Hamid Nii Nortey
Lives & Works in Accra, Ghana.
An emerging self-taught Ghanaian artist, Hamid Nii Nortey developed his interest in painting as a pupil at Mandla Dada Primary School in La, Accra, whilst witnessing the city's considerable transformation. Inspired by post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh, Nortey nods to his creative inspiration in his vibrant palette and scenic representations. Nortey has experimented with a variety of media, including ceramics, sculpture, graffiti and then painting, before arriving at his distinctive style of cross-hatching, which he applies to his figures. His colourful, figurative canvases are inspired by the rapidly changing social landscape of Ghana and the African continent, highlighting the diversity of generations and social classes. Nortey's work has been exhibited extensively in Africa and Europe, and is part of prestigious collections including the X Museum, Beijing and the EW Collection, Germany. Hamid Nii Nortey will be presented by L'Atelier 21.
