Abdoulaye Konaté

Abdoulaye Konaté is a visual artist who creates textile-based installations using woven and dyed clothes. His abstract and figurative tableaux explore both aesthetic language and diverse socio-political and environmental issues. Referring to the West-African tradition of using textiles as a means of communication, Konaté balances global issues with intimate references to his own life and country. His works resemble wall tapestries, mostly being composed of layered, hand-embroidered cotton ribbons.
Dak’Art Biennale 2022 paid tribute to him as “The Master”, with the exhibition: Hommage à Abdoulaye Konaté, l’étoffe d’un maître, Dakar". His art has been also shown in Documenta Fifteen, Aichi Triennale, 2022 and Gwangju Biennale, 2023. Konaté’s works are part of public and private collections including: Arken Museum; Centre Pompidou; Dak’Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Smithsonian Museum; Stedelijk Museum; Foundation Blachère; Musée National du Mali; Fondation Guy & Myriam Ullens; Fundação Sindika Dokolo; Uli Sigg Collection; Tate Modern, among others.
