Girma Berta
Lives & Works in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Girma Berta is a self-taught Ethiopian photographer whose work synthesises street photography with fine art. Berta finds inspiration in the vigour of workers and, armed with his phone, captures a softened and elevated perspective of the various everyday jobs that shape the city. In his latest series 'Motion', Berta portrays the vitality and effervescence of Africa, materialising its energy through a spun effect, giving his subjects an electrifying dynamism. During 1-54 Marrakech 2023, Berta captured several shots of Marrakech's inhabitants, focusing on photographing the city's water carriers and small hawkers. These works will be showcased in the upcoming art fair. Berta's work has been featured in publications such as The Guardian, Okay Africa, Design Indaba, The Huffington Post, NPR and Art Africa Magazine. He was selected to participate in the 2017 New York Times Portfolio Review and won the Getty Images Instagram Grant in 2016. Girma Berta will be presented by Nil Gallery.
