Macharia, Osborne
Born 1984 in Nairobi, Kenya
Lives and works in Vancouver, Canada
Osborne Macharia re-imagines a new Africa through his unique take of Afrofuturism. Not just an attempt at historical revisionism, Macharia champions and draws attention to endemic issues - from gender abuse and female genital mutilation (FGM) to elderly neglect - that too often fall out of the limelight. His extraordinary countermove is evidenced in his dreamlike images, where viewers are transported to an alternate realm; where the subject at hand is conveyed without distraction, shedding preconceived notions of what is possible and what is fantasy. Macharia’s work has been exhibited across the world, including in Brazil, Ethiopia, Italy, Kenya, Mali, Netherlands, Nigeria, and United Arab Emirates among others. He has also won several awards, including Gold, Silver and Bronze Cannes Lions awards over the last few years.
