Lewis, Nate
Born 1985 in Beaver Falls, USA
Lives and works in New York, USA
Combining elements of photography, sculpture, frottage, ink, and graphite drawings, Lewis’ intricately carved works on paper reflect his experience as a critical-care nurse and challenge perspectives on race and history. Treating the paper as an organism, he sculpts patterns and textures akin to cellular tissue and uncovers anatomies of photographed subjects. Nate Lewis explores history through patterns, textures, and rhythm, creating meditations of celebration and lamentations. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University, and practiced critical-care nursing in D.C. area hospitals for nine years.  Lewis’ solo exhibitions include The Armory Show, Fridman Gallery, New York, NY (2019); Expo Chicago, Fridman Gallery, Chicago, IL (2018); Mosaic Project, Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, Lancaster, PA (2017); and Tensions in Tapestries, Morton Fine Art, Washington DC (2017).
