MAGNIN-A was founded to promote the work of contemporary African artists in major exhibitions and fairs. As an independent curator since 1958, André Magnin began his research on contemporary art in Sub-Saharan Africa in 1986 for the historical exhibition he co-curated Magiciens de la terre (presented in 1989 at the Centre Pompidou and la Grande Halle de la Villette). He then constituted the C.A.A.C.-The Pigozzi Collection from 1989 to 2009 and organised important solo and group shows in museums and foundations across the globe. In 1996, he met Philippe Boutté who became his close collaborator.
MAGNIN-A is an aesthetic and political project, engaged in the promotion of contemporary African artists. Today, the gallery represents around 30 artists and has given them a greater visibility on the contemporary art market. These artists are now part of important public and private collections. The work of André Magnin and the gallery MAGNIN-A actively contributed to the contemporary African art market. The gallery actively collaborates with museums and institutions to create exhibitions and publications. Many of its artists have participated in international exhibitions such as la Biennale of Venice and Documenta in Kassel… and have been exhibited in international museums such as Musée du Louvre, The Art Institute Chicago, Vitra Design Museum, Guggenheim Bilbao, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Grimaldi Forum Monaco, Tate Modern, Fondation Louis Vuitton, Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, MoMA and Astrup Fearnley Museet, amongst others.
La galerie MAGNIN-A a été créée pour promouvoir le travail d’artistes contemporains africains, dans de grandes expositions et foires. Commissaire indépendant depuis 1985, André Magnin débute ses recherches sur l’art contemporain en Afrique subsaharienne à partir de 1986, pour l’exposition historique Magiciens de la terre, présentée en 1989 au Centre Pompidou et à la Grande Halle de la Villette, dont il fut Commissaire adjoint. Puis il constitue la collection de la C.A.A.C.-The Pigozzi Collection de 1989 à 2009 et organise d’importantes expositions personnelles et collectives dans des musées et fondations du monde entier. En 1996, il rencontre Philippe Boutté qui devient son proche collaborateur.
MAGNIN-A est un projet esthétique et politique, engagé dans la promotion d’artistes contemporains africains. Aujourd’hui, la galerie représente une trentaine d’artistes et leur a donné une plus grande visibilité sur le marché de l’art contemporain. Les artistes ont désormais intégré de grandes collections publiques et privées. Le travail d’André Magnin et de la galerie MAGNIN-A a activement contribué au marché de l’art contemporain africain.
La galerie collabore activement avec des musées et institutions pour concevoir des expositions et des publications.
