Messouma Manlanbien, Marie-Claire50 Golborne

Born 1990 in Paris, France
Lives and works in Paris, France

Marie Claire Messouma, #7#Map, 2019, Raffia, Hair, Copper, Plaster of paris, Aluminium. 155 x 93 cm. Courtesy of 50 Golborne.

Born in 1990, of both Ivorian and Caribbean origin, Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien lives and works in Paris. Her practice includes objects, soft sculptures, installations, and performances. Investigating the production of forms that belong to a certain concept of the feminine and of the feminine blackness, she experiments with a wide array of materials and craft-making techniques, some of which she reappropriates from the traditional Akan matriarchal culture. Her works engage with notions of aura, conductibility, and resistance, whilst alluding to everyday life.
She received both her MA and BA in Fine Art at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts Paris-Cergy. She has exhibited in French institutions such as FRAC Ile de France; Transpalette, Bourges; CAC la Traverse; Biennale de Montrouge; MAC Val de Marne. Her exhibitions out of France include among others: 38th International EVA Biennale, Limerick; South London Gallery, London; Benetton Foundation, Treviso; MO.CA Centre Per Le Nuove Culture, Brescia.
