Tempé, Antoine(S)ITOR / Sitor Senghor

Born in 1960 in Paris, France. Lives and works in Dakar, Senegal

Antoine Tempe, Adama Paris, 2103, Pigment print on Hahnemühle Fine Art Paper, 1 edition of 100 x 100 cm / 39.4 x 39.4 in, 4 editions of 50 x 50 cm / 19.7 x 19.7 in, Courtesy (S)ITOR/Sitor Senghor

Antoine Tempé is a Dakar-based photographer primarily interested in documenting aspects of contemporary culture on a rapidly changing African continent. Over the years, Tempé has amassed a substantial collection of portraits of artists, performers, dancers, cultural figures and intellectuals. His practice combines close-range, short-term projects focused on performing arts festivals and dance companies with longer peripatetic projects, such as his one-year photographic journey through West Africa and Madagascar in 2000. This, and subsequent trips, laid the groundwork for several bodies of work, which have since been exhibited worldwide including at Addis Foto Fest, Addis Ababa (2016); Rencontres d’Arles (2016); LagosPhoto (2015); Dak’Art – Biennale de l’Art Africain Contemporain, Dakar (2016, 2012); Fondation Zinsou, Cotonou (2011); the Centre National de la Danse, Paris (2008); and Rencontres de Bamako – Biennale africaine de la photographie (2007).
