Sue Williamson is an artist and critically acclaimed author of several books on contemporary South African art. Williamson’s installations, videos, and photographs engage anti-apartheid and post-colonial, global concerns – such as activism, violence, reconciliation, xenophobia, and HIV/AIDS –though the experience of individuals, many of whom would otherwise have remained unheard. In 1997, Williamson founded ArtThrob, the leading online source on contemporary South African artists.
Her latest monograph, Sue Williamson: Life and Work, was published by Skira in January 2016. Williamson’s works have been included in exhibitions and biennales worldwide, and have been acquired by several significant collections, including Tate Modern in London; and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the US. Williamson’s series All Our Mothers (1983–2003) along with works from the series From the Inside (2000–2002) were included in El iris de Lucy. Artistas africanas contemporáneas (Lucy’s Iris), currently exhibited at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC) in León, Spain through June 2016.
