Talwst Santiago’s practice explores issues of transculturalism, memory and ancestry in the contemporary diasporic experience. The artist’s interest in storytelling, in particular narratives from African and Caribbean culture, informs the tension between the powerful thematics of his works and their simultaneous miniature scale.
Curtis Talwst Santiago studied as an apprentice of Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun, a world renowned Cowichan/Syilx First Nations artist from Canada. Santiago has exhibited internationally at venues such as: The New Museum, New York; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Pérez Art Museum Miami; and SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah. In 2018, Santiago’s work featured in the Biennale de Dakar, Senegel and SITE Santa Fe, USA. His work is also in the permanent collection of the Studio Museum in Harlem and Birmingham Museum of Art. His works have been exhibited at the Little Salon Toronto Walnut Contemporary, Toronto (2013); Annual Manifesto Festival Art Exhibition Toronto, Ontario (2013) and Fuse Gallery, New York (2012).
