Erruas, Safaa

Born 1976 in Tétouan, Morocco
Lives and works in Tétouan, Morocco

Safaa Erruas, This World is Mine 1, 2020, Ink and broken glass and paper on cotton paper, 84 x 100 cm, Courtesy of 50 Golborne

Safaa Erruas explores ideas of alienation and connection between the inner self and the exterior world through the meditative abstraction of visceral objects, tacking complex notions such as: home, physical and psychological borders, the singular and the multiple. Her visual language is characterized by the color white, transparencies and light reflections that accompany a process of ritual, repetition and fragmentation. Using a narrow range of materials such as metal needles, broken glass, wire, ink, and paper, the artist contrasts notions of fragility and fluidity with moments of sharp tension.

Erruas graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan, where she currently lives and works. One of Morroco’s prominent female artists, her mid -career solo survey was presented at L’Atelier 21 in Casablanca in January 2018. It was accompanied by the publication of the artist’s first monograph: Le Temps Parcouru. Erruas has exhibited in many Art Institutions around the world including: Sharjah Art Foundation,Sharjah, UAE; Center of Visual Arts, Doha, Qatar; Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, France; Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France; Musée Musac, Leon, Spain; Muhka Museum, Anvers, Belgium; Musée des Arts du Monde, Rotterdam, The Netherlands; MOCADA, New York, USA. Her work has been included in Biennials such as: Biennale de Rabat, 2019, Rabat, Morroco; 12th Havana Biennial, Havana, Cuba; 5th and 7th Biennial d’Art Contemporain Africain, Dakar, Senegal.
