is an internationally renowned composer, band leader, saxophonist, sound experimentalist and mixed-media practitioner. Roberts works in many contexts and mediums, including improvisation, dance, poetry, and theater. She is perhaps best known for her acclaimed Coin Coin project, a multi-chapter work of “panoramic sound quilting” that aims to expose the mystical roots and channel the intuitive spirit-raising traditions of American creative expression while maintaining a deep and substantive engagement with narrativity, history, community and political expression within improvisatory musical structures.
Roberts was raised on the South Side of Chicago, and studied classical clarinet as a youth. She has been in residency at the Whitney Museum of American art (2015); is the recipient of the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award (2013); and has been a guest curator at The Stone (2010). Here solo productions include Lines for Lacy (self-release, 2006); The Chicago Project (Central Control, 2008) and COIN COIN Chapter Four: Memphis (Constellation, 2019), following three previous chapters of COIN COIN released in 2011, 2013 and 2015 respectively. She has also collaborated with a number of artists, including Matt Bauder, Ayelet Gottlieb and Guillermo E. Brown.
