Quarshie, Jeremiah

Born in 1985 in Accra, Ghana. Lives and works in Accra

Jeremiah Quarshie, Franklina, Yellow is the Colour of Water, 2016, Acrylic on canvas, 152 x 122 cm / 60 x 48 in, Courtesy Gallery 1957

Jeremiah Quarshie’s hyperrealistic paintings explore the boundaries of physical and digital production. With detailed portraiture, Quarshie emphasizes the connectedness between people otherwise divided by social, economic or geographical conditions. Employing friends, as well as subjects he scouts from day-to-day life, Quarshie stages his models in both mundane and imagined roles from pageant queens to businesswomen, or laborers. Using tools of hope and aspiration, Quarshie offers respite from the troubled political systems of our times. Since graduating in 2007, his work has been exhibited widely in Ghana, including at the Science and Technology Museum (2015) and the Goethe Institut, Accra (2013). In 2016 in collaboration with curator Robin Riskin, Gallery 1957 held an exhibition of his work, Yellow is the Colour of Water, across multiple sites. The exhibition situated painting as a political project, while the open-ended structure meant that audiences entered as participants and collaborators.
