Modisakeng, Mohau

Born in 1986 in Soweto, South Africa. Lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa

Mohau Modisakeng, Lefa 6, 2016, Inkjet on Epson Hot Press Natural, 170 x 150 cm / 67 x 60 in, Edition of 6 + 2 AP (5/6), Courtesy Tyburn Gallery

Mohau Modisakeng’s intense, while meditative self-portraiture deploys a language of dreams and visions to communicate a sense of suppressed trauma. A sculptor by training, he uses performance, video, and photography to construct his haunting narratives, which revisit the scars of the apartheid era. Modisakeng was the 2016 winner of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award (Visual Arts). His work has been exhibited at Kunstraum Innsbruck, Austria (2015); MoCADA, New York (2015); Museum of Fine Art, Boston (2014); Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town (2014); and Saatchi Gallery, London (2012), among others. Modisakeng contributed to the group exhibition of the South African Pavilion at the 56th Biennale di Venezia, Italy (2015), and is part of a two-person exhibition for the South African Pavilion at the 57th Biennale di Venezia (2017). His work is included in public collections such as the Johannesburg Art Gallery and Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA), Cape Town.
