Mdluli, MbaliROOM Gallery & Projects

Born in 1977, Soweto, South Africa. Lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa

Mbali Mdluli, Memory distorted over a period of time…, 2016, Torn lifestyle magazine on black mount board, 36 x 43 x 4.5 cm / 14 x 17 x 1,2 in, Courtesy of the artist and ROOM Gallery & Projects

Mbali Mdluli is a cross-disciplinary artist working with video, collage, and photography. The artist’s personal narratives are mirrored in her treatment of material, which often falls subject to rigorous processes of deconstruction and reconstitution. Her use of horizontal planes conveys a sense of ambivalence in contending with personal events and sociopolitical themes in an artistic framework, while the presence of analogue and digital tools such as scanners, toy cameras, and expired film indicates Mdluli’s search for a new visual language altogether. She attended the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg in 2010. Selected exhibitions and projects include Pink Dollar, a collaborative performance with Antje Schupp, Kieron Jina & Analisa Stuurman (2016); REVAMP, presented by the Dead Bunny Society, Johannesburg (2015); UNRESOLVED (2015) and HABITAT (2016), both at ROOM Gallery & Projects, Johannesburg; The Indexicality of a Ritual and A City Reimagined, both held at Parking Gallery, Johannesburg (2013); and Unlearning, Goethe on Main, Johannesburg (2012).
