Alaoui, LeilaVOICE gallery

Born in 1982, Paris, France. Died in 2016 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

Leila Alaoui, No Pasara, 2008, C-print, Edition of 5 + 2 AP, 72 x 101 cm / 28 x 40 in, Courtesy Fondation Leila Alaoui, Galleria Continua, and VOICE gallery

Leila Alaoui was a French-Moroccan photographer and video artist, whose life was cut tragically short in 2016 whilst working on a photographic assignment for a women’s rights campaign called My Body My Rights for Amnesty International. Her work explored the construction of identity and cultural heterogeneity, often through the prism of migration. Modes of telling and visualizing personal history remained of constant interest. She studied photography at the City University of New York, before periodically living and working in Morocco and Lebanon. Alaoui’s experiences across multiple cultural and geographic territories indelibly shaped her critical practice. Her work has been published in newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times and Vogue. Presentations have taken place at the Biennale des Photographes du Monde Arabe contemporain, Paris (2016); Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris; Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris (2015); the Ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen), Stuttgart / Berlin (2015); and the Musée de la Photographie et des Arts Visuels de Marrakech (2015).
