Joël Andrianomearisoa’s multifarious works transgress the boundaries of video, fashion, design, sculpture, photography, performance, and installation. His works on paper and textile are perhaps the most indicative of his larger interests; the latter is imbued with an atmosphere that hovers enticingly between the ephemeral and the permanent. Often combining sculptural elements and materials exposed to particular situations and environments, shades of black dominate Andrianomearisoa’s work. In his words: “Working with shades of black offers infinite possibilities. It is not only a colour, but also an attitude … it aims toward the universal.” He was selected for Metropolis Afrique Capitales, 100% Festival, La Villette, Paris (2017); and the 12th edition of Dak’Art – Biennale de l’Art Africain Contemporain, Dakar (2016). Andrianomearisoa has participated in exhibitions at Musée d’Art Contemporain Africain Al Maaden (MACAAL), Marrakech (2016–17); the National Museum of African Art, Washington DC (2015); Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt (2014); and Maison Revue Noire, Paris (2013); among others.
