Ibrahim MahamaAPALAZZOGALLERY

Born in 1987 in Tamale, Ghana. Lives and works in Tamale and Accra, Ghana

Ibrahim Mahama, Material Effects, 2015, Installation view at Eli and Edythe, Broad Art Museum in East Lansing, the US, Courtesy of the artist and APALAZZOGALLERY

Ibrahim Mahama creates spaces of social intervention that probe the boundaries between artistic antagonism and civil participation. Materiality, for Mahama, is used as a form of critique. His preferred medium is that of the burlap sack – in particular that which was imported by the Ghana Cocoa Board and repurposed by charcoal sellers. Mahama’s Untitled series constituted several site-specific works where various public sites in Ghana’s capital city, Accra, were transformed by the installation of woven burlap sewn by local workers and traders, whose names and locations are marked into the coarse jute fabric.

In its physical manifestations, Mahama’s works are often installed in market places or abandoned railway bridges. He has exhibited in various locations in and around Kumasi and Accra; and at the KNUST Museum in Kumasi. Exhibitions further afield include Pangaea II: New Art from Africa and Latin America at the Saatchi Gallery in London, the UK in 2015; and Edson Chagas / Ibrahim Mahama at APALAZZOGALLERY in Brescia, Italy in 2015. Mahama was selected for the 56th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale in Italy in 2015.
