Grace Lynne Haynes’ work is inspired by African American women’s conceptualisation and (re-)definition of feminism. Haynes seeks to examine complex relationships and intersections between Afro-American women, culture, colour, femininity and the African diaspora. The black women in Haynes’ works are painted in deep blacks, and juxtaposed against soft pastel colours indicative of the delicateness of femininity, a trait not typically associated with black womanhood. Haynes successfully creates a network of images that address complex stereotypes and topics, and, at the same time, represents black women as aspirational, dignified, and sublime.

Haynes is an inaugural member of Kehinde Wiley’s Black Rock Senegal residency. In March 2020, she will have her first solo exhibition at Band of Vices Gallery, Los Angeles, followed by a solo exhibition at Luce Gallery, Italy in October 2020. Previously, Haynes has exhibited at the Ontario Museum of History and Art, Untitled Art Miami and Paul Robeson Gallery of Rutgers University, Newark. She is included in the 2020 edition of Forbes 30 Under 30 in Art & Style, and is a selected artist in Daily Collector’s online article “20 Painter’s Who Are Shaping the Next Decade”. Her work has been published in New American Paintings, Creative Quarterly, and Culture Type.
