Gérard Quenum

Born in 1971 in Porto-Novo, Benin. Lives and works in Porto-Novo

'La Cour du Roi', 2013. Acrylic on canvas. 130 x 170 cm / 51.18 x 66.93 in. Courtesy of the artist and Art Twenty one

Gérard Quenum works across multiple artistic practices including painting, drawing, and sculpture. His sculptural works, largely considered to be his most compelling works, draw reference from spiritual motifs and esoteric rituals. Discarded materials such as scrap wood, metal, figurines, and dolls heads are repurposed and reanimated into bewitching, often bodiless, subjects. Quenum gives these shape-shifters succinct, anthropomorphic titles: La bonne bergère (The Good Shepherdess), L’Equilibriste (The Equilibrist), a gesture in part, to central figures in spiritual tales and folklore.

Recent solo exhibitions include Gérard Quenum: Rupture at Fondation Zinsou in Cotonou, Benin in 2013; Dolls Never Die at October Gallery in London, UK, in 2012; and O dragão entre dois mundos (The Dragon Between Two Worlds) at Museu Afro Brasil in São Paulo, Brazil in 2010. His works can be found in esteemed collections such as the British Museum, London, and the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts, Stanford University in Stanford, USA.
