Fabrice Monteiro grew up in Benin and after studying industrial engineering, he began a career modelling, the opportunity for him was one of his initial experiences with the photographic medium. Now behind the lens, Fabrice Monteiro’s images are at the intersection between photojournalism and fashion photography. Monteiro’s latest works, 8 Mile Wall was inspired by a conversation he had with his father as a boy when he realized that, as a black man, the only way to be treated with consideration in Europe at the time was to wear a three-piece suit. Despite Africa’s rising prospects Monteiro believes that, in a way, we are still trying to wear three-piece suits. Monteiro’s works have been exhibited widely, including in Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design (2015–19: Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein; Guggenheim Museum Bilbao; CCCB Barcelona; Kunsthal Rotterdam; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; Albuquerque Museum, New Mexico and Blanton Museum of Art, Austin).
