Zinkpè, Dominique

Born 1969 in Cotonou, Benin
Lives and works in Cotonou, Benin

Dominique Zinkpè, Reine d'un soir, 2019, Acrylic and oil pastels on canvas, 150 x 200 cm. Courtesy of LouiSimone Guirandou Gallery and the artist.

Dominique Zinkpèʼs career is composed of imposing installations and a prolific production of drawings and paintings. His works, influenced by Benin’s rich history, informed by animism, religion and his own internal struggles, have a surrealist quality and depict contorted grotesque human forms in sometimes jarring and unsettling paintings. His sculptures consisting of assemblages of carved ere ibeji dolls engaging the Yoruba concept of twinship are no less arresting.

Recent exhibitions include, Welcome Home Vol.II, MACAAL Museum, Marrakech (2020); Prête-moi ton rêve Casablanca, Dakar, Abidjan (2019-2020); In-discipline #1, Fondation Montresso, Marrakech (2018) and Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, Paris (2017). Zinkpè was awarded the Prix Jeune Talent Afrique in 1993 and the prestigious UMEOA prize at the Dakar Biennale in 2002. His work is in public and private collections including Fondation Zinsou, Bénin; Fondation Blachère, France, amongst others.
