Charlotte, Robert

Born 1966 in Martinique
Lives and works in Fort-de-France, Martinique

Robert Charlotte, Deep 1- serie Sous influence, 2016, Print on Canson Baryta Prestige 340g, 70x50 cm, edition of 5. Courtesy of espace d'art contemporain 14N 61W.

Robert Charlotte is an artist photographer who specialises in portraiture. By contesting the division between the realm of memory and the realm of experience, his photographs comment on the plight of the working class as a form of resistance against the logic of a system inherited from a still painful history, resistance to the global capitalist market system and the challenges facing the economy. His works demonstrate how life extends beyond its own subjective limits and often tells a story about the effects of a common colonial past observed through his various journeys and projects as well as the cultural interactions that result from his encounters. He aims to challenge the binaries we continually reconstruct between both sides of the Atlantic, between Africa and the Caribbean, between our own ‘present’ and ‘past’ selves.

Charlotte studied photography in Paris (1986-89), where he stayed to work in a studio for 10 years. It was there that he refined his photography practice. Charlotte’s most recent solo show, Correspondence, took place at Alliance Française as a part of Nuku Photo Festival, Accra (2018) and later in 2019 at espace d’art contemporain 14N 61W. He has had group shows in Martinique, Guadeloupe, Cuba, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, among others.
