Chambers, Dominic

Born 1993 in St. Louis, USA
Lives and works in New Haven, USA

Dominic Chambers, Kathia in red (reader), 2019, Oil on canvas, 182.8 x 152.4 cm, 72 x 60 inches, Courtesy Luce Gallery

Dominic Chambers creates images of black bodies within moments of leisure and contemplation. His large-scale paintings and drawings reference various literary narratives found in books, various methodologies and African American history. Currently, Chambers is investigating W.E.B. Dubois’ concept of the veil, first articulated in the book The Souls of Black Folk. The resulting works are a series of abstract paintings and monochromatic figurative works that examine both the psychological and literal interpretations of the veil, creating images that disrupt the legibility of the original image and working through the art historical landscape of the monochrome in relation to the black body.

Chambers received his BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 2016 and is an MFA candidate at the Yale University School of Art in 2019. His works have been exhibited widely, and include group exhibitions such as Now Figuration, Portrait Society Gallery, Milwaukee, USA (2017), Post Mode 2.0, John Fonda Gallery, Baltimore, USA (2016); Open Studios, The Pitch Project Gallery, Milwaukee, USA (2015) and Deconstructing the Local, MIAD Contemporary Gallery, Milwaukee, USA (2014).
