Dalléas Bouzar, DalilaGalerie Cécile Fakhoury

Born 1974 in Oran, Algeria
Lives and works in Bordeaux, France

Dalila Dalléas Bouzar, Autoportrait #3, 2018, Oil on canvas, 50 x 40 cm. Courtesy Galerie Cécile Fakhoury

Dalila Dalléas Bouzar questions the status of the painter, the history of art and representation as tools of power. Painting fuels a reflection born of her revolt against the condition of women and the history of dominations. By reinterpreting images of Algeria’s history, she evokes individual and collective memory in Algeria Year Zero (2012) or Princesses (2015), as well as the fantasized vision of the East in Women of Algiers after Delacroix (2012- 18). For Studio Dakar (2018), as part of the Dakar Biennial, she paints portraits of strangers in the street. In Omar (2018) or Saint-Georges and the Dragon (2018) she seeks to represent invisible identities in the field of dominant representations of yesterday and today. Recent exhibitions: Galerie Cécile Fakhoury (Abidjan, 2016), Dakar Biennale 2016 and 2018, Cairo Biennial 2018, SAFFCA (Johannesburg, 2018), Goethe Institute (Dakar, 2019) and Museum of Black Civilizations (Dakar, 2019).
