Working across installation, performance, photography, and sculpture, Serge Attukwei Clottey mines the agency of everyday objects in order to explore narratives of personal, family, and collective histories often relating to trade and migration. This approach is exemplified in “Afrogallonism”, an artistic concept that comments on consumption within modern African through the use of yellow gallon containers. Through cutting, drilling, stitching, and melting found materials, Clottey’s sculptural installations are bold assemblages that act as a means of inquiry into notions of form and history. Seeing art’s potential as a critical social practice, he founded the GoLokal performance collective, which primarily engages with sociopolitical concerns relating to public space and community in Ghana. Clottey’s work opened the inaugural exhibition at Gallery 1957, Accra (2016); and has been shown at Kampnagel, Hamburg (2015); the 27th Festival Les Instants Vidéo, Marseille (2014); Dak’Art – Biennale de l’Art Africain Contemporain, Dakar (2014); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2012); and the Chale Wote Street Art Festival, Accra (2011).
