Appah, Gideon

Born 1989 in Accra, Ghana
Lives and works in Accra, Ghana

Gideon Appah, Her Dream of the Drain, 2018, Acrylics, wax and prints on canvas, 192 x 172 cm, 75 x 67 in. Courtesy Gallery 1957

Gideon Appah’s series, Memoirs Through Pokua’s Window was developed in response to his meditation on his Ghanaian upbringing. His compositions depict domestic interiors and dreamy landscapes shaped by the artist’s own memories, which he then subverts with elements of surrealism. The river motif is ever-present in Appah’s work, highlighting his preoccupation with memory and its transitional nature.

Appah was the 2016 recipient of the 1st Merit Prize at Barclays L’Atelier Art Competition, granting him a three-month residency at Bag Factory Studios, Johannesburg. His work was exhibited as part of the Kuenyehia Art Prize for Contemporary Ghanaian Art, Johannesburg Art Fair (2015), Clay Objects (Past and Present Aesthetics), Nubuke Foundation, Accra (2014), Sensation, Goethe-Institut, Accra (2013) and the KNUST Museum end of year exhibition, Kumasi (2012).
