Andrialavidrazana, Malala

Born 1971 in Antananarivo, Madagascar
Lives and works in Paris, France

Malala Andrialavidrazana, Figures 1876, Planiphere Elemantaire, 2018, Ultrachrome Pigment Print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, Ultra Smooth, Series of 5 + 1 AP, 110 x 140 cm, 43 x 55 in. Courtesy 50 Golborne

Examining borders in a transcultural context, Andrialavidrazana’s photographic projects open up possibilities for storytelling through visual anthropology. In Echoes (from Indian Ocean), co-supported by the Institut Français and the National Arts Council of South Africa and published by Kehrer Verlag, she removes the borders of meaning around specific imagery to inspire cross-cultural associations. In Figures, started in 2015, Andrialavadrizana manipulates maps, stamps and bank notes, creating compositions of heterogeneous motifs that question notions of power and cultural exchanges.

Andrialavidrazana was selected for the 56th EVA International – Irish Biennial. Exhibitions include: 14th Biennale de Lyon, France; Karachi Biennal, Pakistan; Kalmar Kunstmuseum, Sweden; Changjiang International Photography & Video Biennale, China; Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea PAC Milano, Italy; Fondation Donwahi, Abidjan; Rencontres de Bamako – Biennale africaine de la photographie; Théâtre National de Chaillot, Paris and Maison Rouge, Paris.
