Anderson, Noel

Born 1981 in Louisville, Kentucky, USA
Lives and works in New York, USA

Noel Anderson, Can we all just get along?, 2012-2020, Collage on distressed, stretched Jacquard tapestry, 40in x 30in, Courtesy Galerie Anne de Villepoix, Paris

Noel W Anderson’s practice address the material realities of discrimination. He seeks to achieve this by redressing the (in) accuracy of image and conceptual-based circumscriptions contouring the possibilities of black male subjectivities. He redresses these representational (in)accuracies through the weaving of photographic images of black males, allowing to connect contemporary modes of representation – TV and film – to their pictorial ancestors – representational tapestries. Anderson utilizes print-media and art-based research to explore philosophical inquiry methodologies. He primarily focuses on the mediation of socially constructed images on identity formation as it relates to black masculinity and celebrity.

Noel W Anderson has an MFA from Indiana University in Printmaking, and an MFA from Yale University in Sculpture. In 2018, he was awarded the NYFA artist fellowship grant and the prestigious Jerome Prize. His solo exhibition, Blak Origin Moment, which debuted at the Contemporary Arts Center in 2017, was also exhibited at the Hunter Museum of American Art in October 2019.
