Sanogo, AmadouMAGNIN-A

Born 1977 in Ségou, Mali
Lives and works in Bamako, Mali

Amadou Sanogo, Elle me regarde, 2019,Acrylic on canvas, 208 x 180 cm. Courtesy MAGNIN-A

Amadou Sanogo refuses the academicism of art and often uses unstretched, repurposed cloth from local markets rather than traditional canvas. Sanogo developed his own pictorial codes, using abstract and figurative aesthetics and humour to confront issues of political stagnation, ignorance and greed. His works are invested in readdressing his personal narratives and Malian upbringing, alongside the history of his country, its epics and recent events. Sanogo’s recent exhibition include Le Havre-Dakar, Museum du Havre, France (2017); The manuscripts, Flach Gallery, Stockholm (2017) ; Les points de l’individu, VOICE gallery, Marrakech (2017) ; Engagement, conscience, spiritualité, Espace d’art contemporain, Bourg-en-Bresse (2017) ; Folk Art Africain?, FRAC Aquitaine, Bordeaux (2015); Amadou Sanogo, Chapelle des dames blanches, La Rochelle (2015).
