Adewale, Alimi

Born 1974 in Ilorin, Nigeria
Lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria

Alimi Adewale, Anonymous I, 2018, Acrylic and carved wood, dimensions variable. Courtesy Retro Africa

Alimi Adewale explores issues related to the urban fabric, cities and the quotidian of its inhabitants. His work (portraits, landscapes and nudes) combine elements of minimalism and abstraction to evoke the movement and intensity of the cosmopolitan environment. In his Socialites series, Adewale creates mixed media canvases using pieces of aso-oke cloth to reflect on the lifestyle of Nigerian socialites and contemporary notions of glamour in the entertainment industry. Adewale has also created a new series of wooden head sculptures, exploring his interest in the anonymous human form and the experiential function of art. Adewale has participated in numerous residencies including Konstepidemin, Gotenburg (2016) and MILIKI, Lagos (2017). Recent exhibitions include Butterflies over the city, OM’s Flat, Lagos (2016) and Anonymous, Ebunoluwa Foundation, Lagos (2012).
