AbdelBaky, HayamUbuntu Art Gallery

Born 1972 in Kafr ElSheikh, Egypt
Lives and works in Cairo, Egypt

Hayam Abdelbaky, Untitled, 2015, Oil on Wood, 120 x 120 cm. Courtesy of Ubuntu Art Gallery

Hayam AbdelBaky’s aesthetic that pays homage to the vernacular culture of Egypt in a style that melds modern Egyptian art aesthetic with a contemporary disregard for classical conventions of figurative drawing. Hence, her paintings are often vignettes of contemporary life amongst the working class: women huddled over coffee cups and market places. Street life is celebrated in all its glory. The delicacy of her work rests in the attention she pays to each individual she depicts, especially the female figure which is central to her oeuvre along with multiple layers of inherent symbolism. Present and active in the Egyptian art scene since 1995, AbdelBaky has participated in several group and solo exhibitions as well as biennales both locally in Egypt and abroad. Her works are included in many collections such as the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art, Cairo; the Egyptian Ministry of Culture and the Telis Art Foundation, Sweden. Her works can also be found in public and private collections in Morocco, Poland, France and more.
