Cameron Platter makes stories, pictures and projects that are documents of contemporary morality, filling the ordinary and marginal with incendiary new meaning. His work addresses morality in all its guises, using stories appropriated from universal narratives to build a political commentary around life in contemporary South Africa. Platter’s works embody a philosophical way of living and thinking, as a meditation on detritus and consumer cultures — all channeled into a constellation that examines excess in modernity. Many of his works are parts of on-going series and experiments, results of collaboration with weavers, carvers, ceramists and sound artists. Solo exhibitions include U-SAVED-ME, Depart Foundation, Los Angeles (2017); Harvest, Zeitz MOCAA Scheryn Pavilion, Cape Town (2015) and I Saw This, WHATIFTHEWORLD, Cape Town (2014). Selected group exhibitions include Brave New World … 20 Years of Democracy, Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town (2015) and Public Intimacy: Art and Other Ordinary Acts in South Africa, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco (2014). His work is in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York; Frac des Pays de la Loire, Carquefou, Pays De La Loire and the Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town.
