Ngimbi Bakambana Luve
Lives & Works in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Born in Kinshasa, DRC, Ngimbi Bakambana Luve’s expressive works delve into the La Sape culture of his native Congo which, within the context of war, represents hope and escapism for its participants, as well as a bridge between the two Congos. For many, La Sape is considered to be a sort of social exorcism characterised by eccentricity. Bakambana pays close attention to the anamorphosis of La Sape’s garments, understanding their bodies and performed personalities as modes of expression. Bakambana trained at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kinshasa, and was one of the first artists of his generation to have exhibited with masters of Congolese art such as Mavinga, the conductor of the Kinshasa City Orchestra. Ngimbi Bakambana Luve will be presented by Galerie Atiss Dakar.
