Sikhumbuzo Makandula uses photography, video, and performance to explore how space and architecture engage with memory, post-colonial identity, and belonging – particularly in the context of the nation state. His exhibitions and performances are often collaboratively conceived, such as In Search of a Nation with artist Moffat Takadiwa, which was held at Njelele Art Station, Harare (2016). A more recent project was UBUZWE (an isiXhosa word which roughly translates as nationality). Held at ROOM Gallery & Projects, Johannesburg (2017), UBUZWE explored the monument as a site of tension between ideas of South African nationhood and its former, but no less present, colonial histories. Here it is critiqued and represented through institutionalized forms of remembrance, such as public statuary. As a metonym for the construct of nationhood, Makandula places the monument at the center of his fierce psychological, historical, and ideological deconstruction.
