February James’ autobiographical works represent the artist’s own experiences and familial relationships. Her art is concerned with the legacy of family as it is articulated in our everyday lives through our vulnerabilities and expectations. Ever-present in her work is James’ belief that life is about change; life is constantly evolving, persistently growing and unfolding. Though her depicted figures are devoid of formal construct, they nevertheless speak to James and tell her stories, while also striving to capture the essence of a person, without meditating on one’s physicality. As a result, James invites viewers to create their own characterizations, based on individual and personal relationships, and urges them to contemplate the nuances between reality and social construct. James received a BFA from the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena. Her solo exhibitions include A place to belong, Wilding Cran Gallery, Los Angeles (2019) and Band of Vices, Los Angeles (2018). Her work has featured in group exhibitions at several galleries such as Jeffery Deitch, Los Angeles (2019); Gallery Josephine, Martha’s Vineyard (2018); Gregorio Escalante Gallery, Los Angeles (2017) and Papillion Gallery, Los Angeles (2015).
