Lives and works in Paris, France
Beya Gille Gacha is a Franco-Cameroonian multidimensional artist who primarily creates sculptures and three-dimensional installations, but has also worked with photography and video. Her work centers around questions of identity and more generally, society. Recently, beadwork has become an important component of her work. Inspired by the West Cameroonian Bamiléké beadwork tradition of her ancestors, she beads her sculptures – human figures, body parts – appropriating sculptural forms traditionally associated with Western art canon. In doing so, she bridges an often-perceived cultural divide while highlighting and giving new life to the artistry of her ancestors.
