Modupeola Fadugba is an artist working in painting, drawing, and installation, often with a social component. Fadugba holds a M.Ed. from Harvard Graduate School of Education, Cambridge, as well as an MA in Economics and BA in Chemical Engineering from University of Delaware, Newark. Her background in engineering, economics, and education forms the basis of her open-ended approach to interaction and exchange. Works such as Chief and his Wives (2013) build critical narratives around identity and culture, while Eight Days of Lazy (2014) contemplates artistic regeneration. Through an organic thought process incorporating game theory and play as modes of resistance, Fadugba’s work serves as a vehicle for activism and empowerment. Her use of game-related strategies and patterns – such as synchronized swimmers and red dots – deconstruct scales of power, and encourage viewers to decipher and play. Fadugba’s The People’s Algorithm (2014) was awarded El Anatsui’s Outstanding Production Prize in 2014 and its “2.0 version” won a Grand Prize from the Minister of Culture and Communication at Dak'Art - Biennale de l'Art Africain Contemporain, Dakar (2016).
