Victor Ehikhamenor’s practice comprises painting, photography, sculpture, and installation, as well as his unique perforated works on paper. His signature patterning ties together his diverse use of media, revealing a frenetic mélange of gestural abstraction and stylized form. Drawing from the dual aesthetic and spiritual traditions of his upbringing – a small village in Edo State and historic seat of the Benin Empire – his works abound in references to the imagery and symbolism found in traditional Edo religion and Catholicism. Ehikhamenor has received numerous awards and fellowships from organisations such as the Rockefeller Foundation (2016) and the NIROX Foundation (2016). His work has been presented in several biennales including the 5th Mediations Biennale, Poznan (2016); Dak'Art - Biennale de l'Art Africain Contemporain, Dakar (2016); and Biennale Jogja XIII, Yogyakarta (2015). Group exhibitions have taken place at Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA, Lagos) (2011), among others, and he is one of four artists selected for the first Nigerian Pavilion at the Biennale di Venezia (2017).
