Filipe Branquinho’s interest in photography developed through his contact with the worlds of journalism and the arts through his father, a journalist. Branquinho studied architecture in Brazil, but soon returned to Mozambique with the primary aim of pursuing photography more rigorously. Keen to contribute to Mozambican’s long-standing photographic traditions, Branquinho set out to capture the stories of people who had experienced Maputo’s many episodes of local history: from colonialism to independence, civil war, and democracy. Against this turbulent backdrop, he continues to focus on the human condition at close range. Branquinho has participated in several group and solo exhibitions in Brazil, Mozambique, Portugal, and South Africa, including the solo show, Botânica, which was held at Fundação Fernando Leite Couto, Maputo (2016). His work has been acknowledged by several awards including POPCAP'15, the International Prize for Contemporary African Photography (2015) for his series Interior Landscapes (2011–14) – a project exploring the patina of time on urban environments.
