Amadou Sanogo
Lives & Works in Mali
Amadou Sanogo’s work is characterized by stark, minimalistic figures rendered over blocks of intricate patterns and blocks of color. Bursting with symbolism and mystery, in Sanogo’s paintings skulls and headless bodies abound. Painting on unstretched, repurposed cloth purchased from local markets, Mali-born artist’s canvases reference his Senoufo upbringing, as well as contemporary politics and power dynamics. Sanogo studied at the National Institute of Arts in Bamako and has exhibited in Bamako, Marrakesh, London, Paris, Brussels, and elsewhere. His work can be found in the collections of the Frac Nouvelle-Aquitaine MÉCA in Bordeaux and the Manchester Museum. Amadou Sanogo will be presented by Retro Gallery.
