Noureddine Amir: The Sculptural Dresses at Musée Yves Saint Laurent-Marrakech

Coinciding with 1-54 Marrakech, the Musée Yves Saint Laurent-Marrakech presents The Sculptural Dresses, an exhibition dedicated to the works of Moroccan couturier Noureddine Amir. His dresses have a sculptural presence, conceived at the crossroads of fashion and art. Born in Rabat, Amir creates his pieces as hymns to the material he uses, sourced from nature, modelled using elongated contours and uncluttered lines. Wool, raffia, burlap and silk are carefully chosen, then harnessed thread by thread before undergoing a metamorphosis. The material and fabrics are dyed with henna, dried pomegranate rind or indigo. The couturier breathes life into the material while restructuring the precepts of fashion. He exalts these handcrafted creations through a meditative reflection, one that is also focused on the bond, at times unwavering, between fashion and architecture.

“Noureddine Amir is an artist who uses garments as his medium.” – Pierre Bergé

“The totems created by Noureddine Amir resurrect distant forms bequeathed to us by so-called ‘primitive’ societies.” – Moulim El Aroussi, philosopher and art critic
