Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden: Africa Is No Island
The Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) is dedicated to promoting and facilitating access to contemporary African art. As a part of the Special Projects programme, the museum presents two exhibitions: Africa Is No Island, a group photography show; and a semi-permanent showcase of the museum’s collection.
Curated by Afrique in Visu, an Afrocentric photography platform, MACAAL’s exhibition Africa Is No Island showcases 40 emerging and established photographers working on the continent and in the wider diaspora. The exhibition is accompanied by a sound installation capturing the sonic landscape of Marrakech and transposing it to a museum setting.
From Choumali’s intimate portraiture to Mouanda’s depictions of Brazzaville, Africa Is No Island encapsulates and pays tribute to the creative energy and cultural diversity found across the continent, and provides a contextual framework for contemporary Moroccan art.
