Gathering more than 30 artists from the continent and its diaspora, Material Insanity explores material and its multifaceted significance. Through installations made from everyday objects, the exhibition combines various discourses that result in a new aesthetic. This can be seen in works such as Clay Apenouvon’s stretched black plastic film, Owanto’s embroidery exhumed from the collective memory and Cyrus Kabiru’s material reinvention of electronic waste in the form of sculptural eyewear. Through immersive scenography created by the architect and artist Zineb Andress Arraki, the artworks in Material Insanity question the relationship between form and meaning.
The Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) is a private museum with the mission to promote artists from the African continent by establishing itself as an international art platform.
