Ana Zulma’s childhood and early adult life has been shaped by a series of traumatic experiences. She thus refuses the dissociation between art and her life, creating mixed media photographs that document the ebb and flow and collective history of Abidjan. Zulma is interested in the reverberations of opposites within everyday encounters and exchanges, and how they may offer insight into one’s existence. Zulma aims to give visibility to a reality without passing judgment. LouiSimone Guirandou Gallery welcomed Zulma for her first exhibition Bapitopie in December 2016. Bapitopie was an imagining of a utopian reality, transporting audiences to an untainted Babi, as Abidjan is affectionately known. Zulma, in collaboration with Jean-Servais Somian, presented works that sought to move away from the present and reveal other forms of living.
